Requirements for working as a casual tutor at Adult English School

Teach ESL students privately through Adult English School

Basic Requirements:

1. A.B.N. You must have your own Australian Business Number. We only hire contractors as the hours vary day to day and some weeks there may not be any work at all! You must be able to issue us with an invoice. Running your own business means you'll have a better understanding of our system and be able to suggest changes if needed. If you can't make a lesson you're welcome to then hire someone to replace you, provided that person fits our profile.

2. Police check not older than 12 months. While we normally only teach adults, the plan is to expand into the Z-Gen market and by law you will require evidence of a police check when tutoring children. (Check out our preliminary site here - Z Gen English School. Work in progress!) If you wish to apply for one you will need to apply for one that says Certificate for Self-Employed people. More information here

3. TESOL certificate, preferably from TEFL International who we consider to give the most intensive and thorough 4 week certificate course out of all the courses available. Find out more at TESOL Courses Sydney

4. Australian accent (for teaching Australian history, rhyming slang, Oz expressions and more) Yes, we're fair dinkum about this. It doesn't matter where you're from, just as long as you can do a good Australian accent if you're teaching Australian English to one of our students! Please note that the students choose the tutor and we are at the mercy of the whims of the students. If your student is not happy with your accent he/she will request another tutor or not come back. If you speak English as a second language please only suggest yourself if you believe you have no mother tongue influence on your pronunciation or you only plan to teach English to beginners who speak your language.

5. Ability to swap between a strong Australian accent and clear, enunciated English.

6. Ability to teach basic pronunciation techniques

7. Ability to either answer quickly or find quickly the answers to common grammar questions. You should be able to point out parts of sentences to some students who ask. (A good way to test yourself is to look at the sentence you just read and name each word. Egs prepositions, adjectives, nouns, pronouns, articles, tenses - past perfect etc)

8. Flexible times. Ability to work at times such as 8:00am to 10:00am or 7:30pm to 9:30pm weekdays and at various times Saturdays and Sundays. We can work around your other stable job but if you have shift work that regularly changes shifts, it is not possible to retain students.

9. Strong interest in teaching CONVERSATIONAL English using realia. We are not an industrial age institution. We are an information age institution. As a result we offer lessons that adapt to the needs of the students minute by minute. Our private tuition does not follow a structured, standardised 20th century teaching style only relevant to 25% of the population. If you are flexible in your methodology you'll win the hearts and minds of students who have come to us as a last resort after suffering through standard courses elsewhere.

10. Knowledge of teaching IELTS preparation (further training can be provided using our in-house exercises). IELTS preparation is the most common request by adult students. If you don't know IELTS it is less likely you'll get any work.

11. Ability to analyse your student and create your own lessons for them. Students' problems should be individually targeted and exercises would be created by you specifically for that student. (We may have material that can help you too)

12. Active, energetic with a sense of fun. Some students might want to have a lesson in a pub or night club. If in Sydney, you should able to attend occasional pub nights with students in your own time (see the Chinese English Language Exchange Group)

13. Endless patience!

Conditions

1. The plan is for you to tutor your student at Adult Language School, suite 601, level 6, 250 Pitt Street Sydney in one of our partitioned tutoring areas. If all areas are booked for a particular timeslot (10am to 12pm weekdays is very popular) then we'll probably send you to a cafe. You should know of a good cafe in Sydney city where you can conduct private lessons with minimal distractions. While teaching from your home sounds like a good idea, if you haven't got Personal Liability Insurance, it's safer if you teach in a cafe or other place that has its own insurance.

2. You would collect the fees set by Adult English School from the students and give it to the office administrator after each lesson. Keep track of all your hours worked. At the end of the week send us a tax invoice showing the date, name of the student and the amount of hours spent teaching them, along with your ABN and bank details. Invoices will be processed via transfers to your nominated bank account. (Yes, it sounds a bit complicated but it makes our accountants and the ATO happy) If the student requires a receipt we have manual receipts you can write out for them or we can email them one. All invoices are paid on Mondays so please finalise your invoice and email it to us by Sunday night.

3. Payments are a set fee per hour based on hours taught. Some students may pay us in advance. Some students may prefer to pay by credit card or eftpos. We will advise you if this is the case and pay you accordingly. The pay rate for new tutors is $20 per teaching hour. If you work a lot of hours in a 6 month period and most of your students come back for 5 lessons or more, this amount will be reviewed.

4. Please note: We cannot pay you if a student cancels. Payment is based on hours taught only. So if the student cancels at the last minute we can only apologise and hope the next student turns up for you.

5. Photocopies and other materials are your responsibility. We do have a collection of standard exercises to get you started with your first lesson and we can assist you with other exercises and files, depending on what the student has requested from us, but once you have had a lesson with the student you will know better than us what that student needs and your experience will enable you to better target that individual student through developing your own exercises for them.

6. To add your CV to our database and have someone contact you to arrange an interview, please click here.

Many thanks

James Hogan
