Working as a Private Tutor at Adult English School

We get about 5 resumes, phone calls and walk-ins per day asking for a job. It's always heart breaking to have to say no. Please save us some time first by reading the basic requirements and if you fit the bill, submit your CV online via our resume upload application.

About us
We are a private non-profit tuition service, NOT financially supported by any government organisation, based in Sydney city.

Rates
Unfortunately, our overheads are high so we're not in a position to pay private tutors public school rates. If you just need some casual work to get you by while you look for a real job, this could be what you're looking for.The standard award rate for our particular industry is $15.85 per hour. We pay $20 per teaching hour to new tutors on invoice only. You would be a casual contractor and invoice us for your time at the end of the week using your Australian Business Number.

Flexibility
If we have chosen you to work with us, we will be happy for you to teach with us as a stepping stone to a better position elsewhere. Most tutors stay for 3 to 6 months. We give you plenty of support, you can choose the times you wish to work depending on the students you want, and we make up for the $20 per teaching hour rate with facilities, freedom and a friendly atmosphere.

Lesson times
Lesson times are decided on the whims of students. There is no work during December, January and April as most private students take holidays, and there is a low amount of work during July and August due to students being sick or getting away for the winter (high cancelation period) The most popular timeslots are 10am to 12pm and 5.30pm to 7.30pm weekdays.

Trial period
There is usually a trial period of 3 months. Most students usually have a minimum of one lesson a week and plan for five x two hour lessons,  unless it's a one-off last minute lesson before an exam. If students repeatedly leave after just one lesson with you, we'll know that this position may not be suitable for you.

So, knowing that, if you're still interested, please continue reading

Basic Requirements:

1. A.B.N. - Australian Business Number. We only hire contractors as the hours vary day to day and some weeks there may not be any work at all! You must be able to issue us with an invoice at the end of each week. Invoices are paid on Mondays.

2. TESOL certificate - preferably from TEFL International

3. Australian accent (for teaching Australian history, rhyming slang, Oz expressions and more) Note: Equal Opportunity Laws are important to us, so it doesn't matter where you're from, just as long as you can do a good Australian accent if you're teaching Australian English to one of our students! A lot of the time students come to us to correct their pronunciation. Pronunciation is something that can't be taught well in a group environment. A lot of students want to remove their mother tongue accent and replace it with something like the Australian accent! You'll also find students want to understand Australian culture, customs, idioms and slang so being familiar with this side is important too. NB: Not too thick an accent though. If students can't understand you at all they'll just leave.

4. Ability to swap between a strong Australian accent and clear, enunciated English.

5. Ability to teach basic pronunciation techniques

6. Strong interest in teaching CONVERSATIONAL English using realia.

7. Excellent English grammar skills.

8. Skilled at teaching both General and Academic IELTS. Knowing essay writing and graph describing techniques is crucial. For every general English student that walks through our door we get about five IELTS students. Knowing IELTS will bring you more students.

9. Ability to analyse your student and create your own lessons for them. Each student's problem should be individually targeted and exercises would be created by you specifically for that student.

10. Active, energetic with a sense of fun. Some students might want to have a lesson in a pub or night club. An open mind and a positive, curious personality will get your students coming back.

11. Endless patience and a positive attitude.

12. Confirmations of lessons will be emailed to you and it's expected you'll email a confirmation back within an hour. We also use txt messaging via mobiles. Information about yourself will be advertised on our website. We get all our students via online advertising. Exercises for classes are stored as pdfs, doc files and publisher files on our Windows 7 and Windows XP computers using Office 2010 publisher and OpenOffice file systems. Students frequently take their homework home on their usb drives. It's essential that you're familiar with this kind of technology for our unique tuition systems to work for you easily.

Conditions

1. Payments are a set fee per hour based on hours taught. It's expected you will take payment from the student at our school whether that be processing card transactions or accepting cash. Some students may pay us in advance. We will advise you if this is the case and pay you accordingly.

2. Please note: We cannot pay you if a student cancels. Payment is based on hours taught only. If a student cancels at the last minute we can only apologise and hope your next student turns up.

3. Photocopies and other materials are your responsibility. We do have a collection of standard exercises to get you started with your first lesson and we can assist you with other exercises and files, depending on what the student has requested from us, but once you have had a lesson with the student you will know better than us what that student needs and your experience will enable you to better target that individual student through developing your own exercises for them.
